Verts are the most simple and efficient tool for climbing in steep and deep terrain. Weighing less than 2.5 lbs (1070 grams), they are small enough to fit inside most backpacks and can easily be strapped to the outside of any pack. The new “Verts Ultra” version weighs in at 1.8 lbs (805 grams). Both offer a lifetime warranty on the platforms.
These plastic hinge-free snowshoes compress the snow as you climb and create a staircase leading straight up to the goods. In the steep terrain verts are much more efficient than splitboards as you climb straight up to your destination rather than doubling the distance by zig zagging and putting them on an off is simple and quick. Once the staircase is set, you probably won’t even need your verts to boot back up to the top. Perfect for sessioning short steep zones or making a long, steep ascent for a big ride back down.
Verts excel in the steep ascents but hiking through long flat sections is not as efficient as a splitboard would be. So plan your route accordingly and pick the best tool for the job. Many riders bring both a splitboard/touring skis and Verts on long trips to couloirs deep in the backcountry.
These are heavily used by the Grassroots Powsurf team, Travis Rice’s Natural Selection crew, the Absinthe Films snowboard crews and the TGR athletes and film crews. Pretty much any professional snowboarder who travels in the backcountry uses these and skiers ascending steep lines and couloirs are catching on now too. This could be the best bang for your buck you’ve ever spent on a backcountry tool!
Instructions for putting your Verts on can be found here.
See our video page to see them in action, stomping to the top of chutes and lines both big and small.
